Extreme contrast

This is one of the first I took in my Urban decay, lost spaces and industrial ugliness photo essay (taken mainly around the dock areas of Plymouth - "urban ugly" for short).

Pomphlett Creek

I'm not sure what it was that drove me to treat this with such high contrast. Perhaps it was the drama of the sky, perhaps the starkness of fine ladies against the muddy bottom of the creek.

In a future post you'll see what lies behind this shot — the gracefully decaying ladies who gave the best of themselves in service on the water.

comments / feedback / critique welcome as always

That's a very eye catching picture.
I know close to nothing about photography, but I know what I like and this is a really cool picture.
I feel inspired to create some B&W images.

It is a difficult decision whether to add more contrast or less. Usually the image dictates that decision.

Really surreal, Mark.Kind of like an end of days theme. I especially like the power lines in the b/g-very ominous.

Is this where boats go to die, or what?

I'm looking forward to more.

Thanks for the feedback peeps. @TLI: yes, just a little behind where I'm standing - you'll see some soon.

@Jeff - more end of days to come...

Stunning shot, I like the contrast - have you used HDR? I will look forward to seeing the decaying ladies.

Hi StarNiteSky, welcome :)

Yes, I used HDR for this one. It was a bright day, despite the clouds, and already a high contrast scene. And I thought I'd pump the contrast some more :)

High contrast works for this, definitely. It's a sad scene, and as I commented in your more recent post, it's also a historic one. Image this scene in "the day." Poor boats - very sad indeed.
