Waiting for collection

I think this is called "a shot from nothing", borrowing a term from snooker :)

Pallets, Tyre And Junk

Serendipity

I was out with my camera, walking around an interesting area near where I live. I was specifically looking for photo opportunities when I bumped into this scene. The junk was in a backlane beside some small work-yards, stacked and waiting for recycling collection.

I didn't touch any of it — the composition is just as I came across it. What initially drew my eye were the lovely relationships between the elements and their balancing shapes. The pooling of light and the way it fell across the scene was what made the shot for me.

comment / critique / feedback positively encouraged!

The lighting is pretty amazing. I would call the serendipity too. I used to walk alleys all the time looking for shots, but that was a decade ago...very nice shot.

Great photograph. I like photos that appear to have been taken a long time ago. The composition and "developing" of this shot are spot on!

@Maisy: Thanks for that. I must confess to a bit of dodging and burning ;) But only to enhance the light and shadow already present.

@Roger: Have a look around my main web site I'm sure you'll find some more :)

I must lay the fine composition at the doors of whoever did the stacking!

@Nivi: ...apart from the dodging and burning! (but see my get-out clause, above, lol) Thanks for saying such nice things :)

I love this as well. It makes me think of an old film - "On the Waterfront," for some reason. I know the black and white is a huge part of it, but it's also the mood that's created from the lit area, and combination of line and shape. Great job. Isn't it wonderful when you find what you didn't know you were looking for?

Hy Sandy - that's a great honour, to have my shot bring to mind The Waterfront, thanks!

I must admit, I'm almost ready to sit and watch a few Hitchcock films. I think I know enough now, maybe, that I can recognise and learn from his fantastic composition, lighting and mood setting techniques.

We'll see :)

..and I guess you make your own serendipity -- by getting out there and giving luck a chance!
